What happens next
- Once you have submitted your completed application form to the Programmes Department in USIT in Dublin, your application will be vetted. If it can be approved you will be contacted via phone to make payment.
- Programmes will contact you via post or phone to acknowledge receipt and advise you of the status of your application. It will either be ready to forward to the programme sponsors in the US or you will be advised there is a problem and further clarification or documentation is required. You will also be sent a J-1 Visa Welcome Pack with your US Embassy/Consulate appointment date (NI applicants will have to make their own appointment through the US Consulate in Belfast Call Centre). The Welcome Pack contains full instruction on the forms etc that you will need to take to your interview.
- If there is any problem with your documents you and your Host Company must rectify any issues immediately. Failure to do so will delay your processing and ultimately your departure for the US.
- Once you are approved your application forms will be sent to Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), the official Programme Sponsors and the only organisation that can legally accept you onto the programme. CIEE will thoroughly check your eligibility, Training Plan and contact your host-company in the USA. They will ensure that the Host Company meets all requirements of the US Government and if necessary perform a site visit to your company.
- If satisfied that all is OK, CIEE will issue you with a work authorisation document called a DS-2019, approved DS-7002 and a SEVIS receipt (I-797 or I-901) and an approved DS-7002. If CIEE are not satisfied, then you or your US host company may be required to submit further documentation. CIEE may also decide that your Company/Training Plan is not suitable and in such cases your application will be rejected. If you are rejected full cancellation fees will apply.
- If approved, CIEE will send your DS-2019 work authorisation document, SEVIS receipt and approved DS-7002 to the USIT Programmes Department. You will be contacted by a USIT representative at this point in order to book your flights. Your DS-2019 will not be released to you until you have booked and put a deposit down on a flight.
- Programmes will check that this document is correct and will then forward this document to you by post with your pre-departure pack provided you have booked your flights. Failure to book your flights may lead to delays in getting to the US Embassy and receiving your visa. Your pre-departure pack contains valuable information about your time in the US, so be sure to read over it before you depart and take it with you when you go!
- You then go for your Embassy/Consulate appointment with your passport and all relevant documentation as outlined in the Visa Application Guide, which was sent to you shortly after you applied for the programme.
- Once you have been successfully interviewed, the US Embassy will issue your J-1 Visa and return to you within 5-10 working days by way of the pre-paid self-addressed envelope you provided to them at interview. Your J-1 visa is issued at the discretion of the US Embassy and neither USIT nor CIEE will be responsible if you are refused a visa. If your visa application is rejected, full cancellation fees will apply.
