How to Apply

In order to apply for the Internship/Professional Career Training USA programme you need to follow these steps:

  1. Secure a Trainee position with a host company in the US. Please see section on .
  2. Fully complete the Trainee Application form.
    Please be sure to use the as this may help to eliminate any delayswith your application and clarify any required documents. Be sure to indicate which programme you are applying for (ie.Internship or Professional Career Training)
  3. Have your Host Company fully complete the DS-7002 – Your company must go to this in order to obtain and complete this form. Please note they must complete this form and return it directly to you.
  4. Submit both forms and additional documentation (see checklist below) via post ONLY to USIT Internship/Professional Career Training Programmes, 19/21 Aston Quay, O’Connell Bridge, Dublin 2, alternatively you may book an appointment to submit your documents in person. You may request this via email at - please keep in mind that appointment availability may be limited and will only be available during normal business hours, Monday to Friday.
  5. After submitting your forms, you will be contacted via phone and expected to pay your full (the programme fee includes fully comprehensive mandatory insurance for the duration of your stay in the USA ) and the SEVIS fee. Please note if your Host Company must undergo the Site Visit requirement we will contact you and you will be expected to pay this fee in addition to fees listed above.

NB! You may reserve and pay a deposit on your flights with USIT at this time, if you choose to, however we cannot guarantee that your visa will be issued, so would advise that you book flexible tickets that can easily be changed. If you wish to book your flights anyhow, then please do not book a flight departing any earlier than 10 weeks from the date you are applying or a flight that cannot be changed to a later departure date should your application take longer to process.

What documents are required for a complete application form:

  1. Completed Application for Trainee Programmes signed by all relevant parties in all sections.
    • If you are earning less than US$750 per month while on traineeship you must attach an original bank statement dated within the past 30 days or a guarantor letter
    • If you have completed your coursework, but have not yet received your degree please obtain a letter from your university/college on headed paper stating this fact.
    • Your ‘Statement of Training Objectives’ should illustrate a clear relationship between you current studies/career, your placement and your future career goals. For example, if your placement is in the travel industry, then you need to clearly state that this is the industry you plan to continue working in once you return from the US.
    • The Interview Form will be completed when you call into the USIT office. Do NOT complete this form yourself before calling into USIT.
    • Sign and initial all sections of the Participant Declaration for Trainee Programmes.
  2. Completed Original DS-7002
    • For Professional Career Training Applicants - no phase of training should exceed 3-4 months duration. If you are going to the US for 18 months there should be at least 5 phases of training!
    • Make sure that you and the Host Company representative have signed the DS-7002 in the appropriate section.
  3. Certified copy of Academic Transcript – this can be obtained from your University/College’s Registrar’s Office. Request this early as it may take a few days to obtain!
  4. One photocopy of the personal details page of your passport.
  5. One copy of your most up-to-date CV.
  6. One photocopy of your academic certificate/diploma/degree if graduated (See above if you have yet to receive your parchment)
  7. One photocopy of previous J1 Visas and/or DS-2019s (formerly IAP-66)

* Due to US Immigration regulations, you cannot enter the US any more than 14 days prior to your INT or PCT (trainee) start date. You may stay in the USA for up to 30 days after the last date of your trainee programme. All fees must reflect your total duration of stay in the USA and not just the duration of your Traineeship. The entire duration of stay is based on the date of departure to the US and the date you will return to Ireland. When calculating your duration of stay keep in mind that 1 January to 31 May 2007 is 6 months total duration, but 1 January to 1 June 2007 is 7 months total duration.
